Disk Copy can be found in the Utilities folder posted here. From the Read Me included with this software: Network Assistant 2.0.1 Updater Read Me Contents Introduction Using Network Assistant 2.0.1 Updater Updating Workstations Using Network Assistant Changes in Network Assistant 2.0.1 Introduction This Read Me describes how to use Apple Network Assistant 2.0.1 Updater. Network Assistant 2.0.1 Updater updates Apple Network Assistant from version 2.0 to version 2.0.1. This Read Me also describes the changes in Network Assistant 2.0.1. IMPORTANT You can only use the Network Assistant 2.0.1 Updater to update Network Assistant 2.0. You cannot use it to update Apple Network Assistant 2.0 Demo. Network Assistant 2.0.1 Updater replaces these three items: - Network Assistant Startup extension - Network Assistant program - Network Assistant Security program Network Assistant 2.0.1 Updater replaces only items that are already installed on a workstation. Whether an item is installed on a workstation depends on how it is used in your network: - An administrator workstation (you use it to administer the network) will have the Network Assistant Startup extension and Network Assistant program installed. It may also have the Network Assistant Security program installed. - A user workstation will have the Network Assistant Startup extension installed. It may also have the Network Assistant Security program installed. Installation Options There are three ways you can update Network Assistant to the new version: - With Network Assistant 2.0.1 Updater on the hard disk of the workstation, perform the update as described in the next section, "Using Network Assistant 2.0.1 Updater." For example, you might do this after you download Network Assistant 2.0.1 Updater from the Apple Network Administrator Toolkit World Wide Web site to your administrator workstation. - Copy Network Assistant 2.0.1 Updater to a floppy disk then go to each workstation to perform the update as described in the next section. - Use Network Assistant to update user workstations and other administrator workstations remotely from an administrator workstation. You must first update the administrator workstation as described in the next section. For more information about updating workstations in this way, see "Updating Workstations Using Network Assistant" later in this document. Using Network Assistant 2.0.1 Updater Follow these steps to update Network Assistant using Network Assistant 2.0.1 Updater on a workstation's hard disk or a floppy disk: 1. Double-click the Network Assistant 2.0.1 Updater icon to open the program. 2. In the dialog box that appears, click Update. The Network Assistant 2.0.1 Updater attempts to locate the Network Assistant items on the workstation. If it cannot find an item, a dialog box appears. 3. If this happens, do one of the following: - Locate the item using the file directory in the dialog box, then click Update. - Click Skip if the item is not installed on the computer. When the update is complete, an alert box appears to tell you that the update was successful. 4. Click OK to quit Network Assistant 2.0.1 Updater. IMPORTANT To update a Network Assistant item, it must be installed on the workstation. For example, if you want to update Network Assistant Security on user workstations as described in the next section, the program must be installed on the administrator workstation when you update it. If an item that you want to update is not on a workstation, you can install it as described in Part 1 of Apple Network Administrator Toolkit. Updating Workstations Using Network Assistant After you have updated Network Assistant on an administrator workstation (as described in the previous section), you can use Network Assistant to remotely update the other workstations in your network. To do so, you select the workstations you want to update then use the Copy Items dialog box to find the Network Assistant item you want to copy to the workstations, choose where to copy the item, and copy it. Each workstation must have Network Assistant Startup installed and have the following administrator access privileges selected: - "Allow administrators to" - "Restart and shut down this workstation" - "Copy items to this workstation" - "Delete and replace items on this workstation" You set administrator access privileges using the Network Assistant Security program. To update workstations on your network: 1. In Network Assistant, select the workstations you want to update in the Workstation Status window or any report window. 2. Choose Copy Items from the Manage menu. 3. In the dialog box that appears, choose from the "Find items on" pop-up menu the disk on your workstation where the Network Assistant items are located. 4. Use the pop-up menus below the "Find items on" pop-up menu to specify how to search for the Network Assistant item. If a text box appears to the right of the pop-up menus, enter the text necessary for the search. For example, you might choose "name" and "contains" from the pop-up menus and enter "Network Assistant" in the text box. 5. Click Find. All the items that match your search criteria appear in the "Items found on" list. 6. Select the names of the Network Assistant items you want to copy to the other workstations in the "Items found on" list. For example, you can select both Network Assistant Startup and Network Assistant Security to update user workstations. 7. Use the "Place items in" pop-up menu to choose where you want to copy the item on the other workstations. For example, if you are updating the Network Assistant Startup extension, select the copy that appears in the "Items found on" list that is in the Extensions folder in the System Folder on your workstation, then choose "Same relative location" to copy the file to the Extensions folder on the other workstations. 8. Click Copy. 9. An alert box appears to tell you that the item already exists. Click Replace. IMPORTANT If you update the Network Assistant Startup extension on other workstations using Network Assistant, you will need to restart the other workstations to use the new version. To do this using Network Assistant, be sure the workstations are selected in the Workstation Status window or any report window, then choose Restart from the Manage menu. In the dialog box that appears, select the option you want to use and click Restart. Note: After you have updated the other workstations using Network Assistant, you can use Network Assistant to delete older versions of the software. To do this, first create a Software Version report for the workstations, then select the items you want to delete in the report window and choose Delete Selected Items from the Manage menu. Changes in Network Assistant 2.0.1 Network Assistant 2.0.1 fixes the following problems, which sometimes occurred when using the Copy Hard Disk command: - The command sometimes failed if the destination workstation had File Sharing turned on. - Network Assistant did not rebuild the desktop of the destination workstations after copying the hard disk. - Network Assistant deleted files on the desktop of the destination workstations, although it did not copy files on the desktop of the administrator workstation to the detstination workstations. Network Assistant no longer deletes the files. Because of limitations with desktop printing, Network Assistant will not copy files on the desktop of the adminstrator workstation to destination workstations. Network Assistant 2.0.1 also fixes these problems: - On a network with more than one zone and using certain non-Apple network routers, Network Assistant froze when you chose Workstations from the Setup menu. - Network Assistant did not turn off certain screen saver programs on user workstations when you chose Lock Screen or Share Screen from the Interact menu. - When you used the Copy Items command, Network Assistant sometimes reported incorrectly that there was not enough free space on the destination workstation to complete the command.
