Name: Assistant Toolbox Version: 1.0.1d1 Released: March 22, 1995 Description: This version of the Assistant Toolbox extension resolves a known problem with the extension when trying to print to the LaserWriter Select 310 printer. The problem is outlined below (taken from the Tech Info Library). This release of the software has NOT been fully tested, so we are distributing it as an unsupported release. Some quick printing tests were performed with the extension on a Power Macintosh 8100 and a PowerBook 540c running System 7.5. Print jobs from the Finder and SimpleText, with background printing on or off, printed without any problems. Since there were only minimal changes to the extension, this version seems very stable. The enclosed file is a self-extracting archive. To use, download, double-click the downloaded file (this decompresses it). Assistant Toolbox: Problem Printing to LaserWriter Select 310 TOPIC --------------------------------------------------------- When I try to print from my PowerBook 520 to my LaserWriter Select 310, I cannot print my document. Why does this happen and how do I work around this problem? DISCUSSION ---------------------------------------------------- The PowerBook 500 series ships with Assistant Toolbox 1.1 installed, it is also a part of System 7.5. The Assistant Toolbox has a feature called Print Later that allows a user who normally prints to networked printer to spool documents for printing while not physically connected to the network. While the Assistant Toolbox is usually installed on PowerBook computers, any Macintosh with it installed can experience similar issues. The above problem occurs when a user attempts to print to a LaserWriter Select 310. With the Assistant Toolbox extension loaded and AppleTalk active, when you try to print you get the following dialog box: "This document can not be printed at the current time on the printer 'LaserWriter Select 310' because the printer is not available on the AppleTalk network." If AppleTalk is inactive then a dialog box will read: "This document cannot be printed at the current time because AppleTalk is inactive. To activate AppleTalk, go to the Chooser." There is no selection that will allow the user to print a document on the LaserWriter 310. Here are three workarounds: ¥ One option to get around this problem is to turn Background Printing off. This is done in the Chooser, click on the LaserWriter Select icon on the left, then the option will appear on the right (under the port selection area). Change the radio button setting to OFF. This will prevent the Assistant ToolBox from interfering. ¥ When the message "This document can not be printed at the current time on the printer 'LaserWriter Select 310' because the printer is not available on the AppleTalk network", click the Print Later button and the document should print in a few minutes. ¥ If the above workaround doesn't work, you will need to restart the PowerBook with extensions off. This temporarily disables the Assistant Toolbox and the user can then print to the LaserWriter Select 310. Simply restarting after printing restores all the Assistant Toolbox functions. While removing the Assistant completely will resolve the problem, other features such as improved battery management, persistent RAM disk, sleep key, automatic remount of shared volumes, print later, and the anti-submarining cursor will be unavailable.
