Name: Dispatcher/Ofoto Driver Version: 4.2 Released: March 13, 1997 Requires: Dispatcher 2.0, or Ofoto 2.0.1 or later. Description: Fixes an incompatibility with Virtual Memory. This software consists of a self-extracting archive. To use, download it to your hard drive and then double-click it to decompress the software. From the Read Me included with this software: Apple Color OneScanner Models 600/27 and 1200/30 OneScanner Dispatcher 2.1 For additional information, consult the Printers and Imaging World Wide Web (WWW) site. The Web address is: http://product.info.apple.com/productinfo/datasheets/imindex.html Before Installing the Software To avoid potential conflicts during installation of the OneScanner Dispatcher software, you must first restart your computer with extensions turned off. While holding down the Shift key, choose Restart from the Special menu and continue to hold the key down until you see a message indicating that the extensions are off. When you restart your computer after you install the OneScanner Dispatcher software, the extensions will turn on again. New to Version 2.1: Using Virtual Memory Previous versions of OneScanner Dispatcher were not compatible with virtual memory. With OneScanner Dispatcher 2.1, you can now turn on virtual memory. Duplicating the Apple Color OneScanner Plug-In Module The Apple Color OneScanner plug-in module allows you to scan images directly into applications that are compatible with Adobe(TM) Photoshop plug-ins. Make a copy or an alias of the original plug-in and move the copy or alias to the location you want. The original plug-in must remain in the Plug-in folder in the Apple Color OneScanner folder or you will not be able to create new scans with the OneScanner Dispatcher application. Note: Plug-in filters shipped with Adobe Photoshop are proprietary and will not work with the OneScanner Dispatcher application. Checking File Formats for Drag-and-Drop Applications If you add your own drag-and-drop applications to the OneScanner Dispatcher window, make sure the applications support the file formats you use to save scanned images. For example, if you scan an image and save it in JPEG format, the application you add must be able to open a JPEG document. Opening EPS Images in PowerPoint or Canvas You should be aware that the PowerPoint and Canvas applications sometimes cannot open images saved in EPS format using the OneScanner Dispatcher application. Try saving images in another format, such as PICT or TIFF, or in any other format supported by your graphics application. Auto-Straightening The Straighten feature relies on well-defined, high-contrast, rectangular edges on the scanned document, as well as some image content, to determine the correct rotation required to straighten the image. This function also expects the scanned document to be located away from the edges of the scan window. If you have a problem with the auto-straighten feature, you may be able to resolve this problem by adjusting the image or document's tone. Click the Tone button to open the Tone dialog box, and adjust the brightness and contrast to a darker setting for better results. If the document you're scanning lacks a discernible straight edge on the image boundary, you may not get satisfactory results when you scan with the Straighten option on. Align the document carefully on the scanner glass, turn off the Straighten option, and try the scan again. Using the Select All Command To Put an Image Into an Archive To save an image that you just scanned, you can use the familiar Save (or Save As) commands. If you have an archive window open, however, there is another simple way to put the new image into the archive. 1. With the image in the active window, choose Select All from the Edit menu. 2. Drag the selected image to the archive window and drop it there. 3. In the dialog box that appears, type a name for the image and click Save. If you change your mind and want to cancel the selection, choose None from the Edit menu. Resolving Conflicts With Earlier Versions of TextBridge OCR Software If you've installed an earlier version of the TextBridge software, the AVision scanner driver may be in conflict with the new Apple scanner driver used by TextBridge. To resolve the conflict, follow these steps: 1. Open the Extensions Manager. 2. Turn off the AVision scanner driver. 3. Restart your Macintosh. When you want to use the AVision driver again, you can use the Extensions Manager to turn it back on. Using the Automatic Document Feeder CHECKING THE GLASS: Before you attempt to scan from the document tray, make sure that no documents have been left on the scanner glass. The document feeder won't work if originals are on the glass. CHECKING THE PAPER: If you have problems with the document feeder (for example, two pages are fed in at once), the originals you are using may be damp. Always use dry originals, and keep them in a dry place. IMPORTANT Some Adobe Photoshop plug-in compatible applications will not support multipage scans and will only scan the first page of a multipage document. Using the Transparent Media Adapter SCANNING TRANSPARENCIES: For better image quality when scanning 8" x 11" overhead transparencies, it is recommended that you use the flatbed, not the optional Transparent Media Adapter. SCANNING REFLECTIVE ART: For better image quality when scanning reflective art with the optional Transparent Media Adapter attached, it is recommended that you place a sheet of white paper over your artwork to reflect light back to the scanner, or use the standard flatbed scanner cover. Using an Earlier Model of the Apple Color OneScanner You can use an earlier model Apple scanner alongside your new Apple Color OneScanner. To save, open, and edit scanned images, you must use the original software that came with the scanner. The power and features of the OneScanner Dispatcher application are available only if you scan images with your new Apple Color OneScanner. If you've connected your new scanner and the original scanner in a SCSI chain, you can use either scanner, but only one scanner at a time. Follow these guidelines: 1. Replace the original scanner driver with the new scanner driver. 2. Turn off the scanner you don't want to use. 3. Turn on the scanner you want to use. 4. Restart your Macintosh. 5. Use the original software that came with the scanner to open, save, and edit images you scan with the original scanner. (Ofoto software, for example, came with some older scanners.) Use the new OneScanner Dispatcher application for images you create with the new scanner. Tips and Troubleshooting MEMORY ADJUSTMENTS: To increase the OneScanner Dispatcher's performance, try increasing the amount of memory assigned to the OneScanner Dispatcher application. For information about changing application memory, see "Allocating Memory" in Macintosh Guide (the onscreen help system). INTERLACED GIF FILES: Some GIF files are interlaced and are not supported by the OneScanner Dispatcher, causing images to be distorted. JPEG COMPRESSION: JPEG does not support black and white or halftone images. It is recommended that you save these types of files in uncompressed TIFF or PICT format. RESOLUTION REQUIREMENTS: The OneScanner Dispatcher application requires a minimum monitor resolution of 640 x 480. HARD DISK SPACE REQUIREMENTS: You need approximately three times the image size in free hard disk space to be able to open images. For example, if you scan an image that is 3 MB, you need at least 9 MB of free hard disk space to open the image. COLORSYNC 2.1: ColorSync 2.1 is an Apple system extension that makes colors consistent across various input and output devices, such as scanners, printers, and monitors. Saving, opening, and editing images may take a little more time with ColorSync on. To maximize your scanner's speed, try turning ColorSync off. See your user's guide for instructions. For additional information about ColorSync and Apple Color OneScanners, as it becomes available, see the Printers and Imaging World Wide Web (WWW) site. The Web address is: http://product.info.apple.com/productinfo/datasheets/imindex.html PRINTING TO LASERWRITER PRINTERS: To print to a LaserWriter, click Scan and then choose the name of your LaserWriter from the Destination menu. FASTER SCANNING: For faster scan speeds, Apple recommends that you use resolution settings of 75, 150, 300, 600, or 1200 dpi. METATOOLS KPT AND CONVOLVER: MetaTools Convolver bundled with the Color OneScanner 1200/30 does not support grayscale images. If you are using KPT or Convolver, increase the amount of memory assigned to the OneScanner Dispatcher application by at least 2 MB of random-access memory (RAM). MULTISYNC DISPLAYS: When changing the display resolution with an open image, you must close the image and reopen it for the Tool palette to be positioned correctly. (c) 1997 Apple Computer, Inc.
