Using Disk Copy

If your computer uses a non-Apple CD-ROM drive, you need to make a set of backup disks for some of the software located on the CD that came with your computer or other CDs from Apple Computer. The backup disks let you recover your software if it is damaged.

What is Disk Copy?

Disk Copy is a program that creates exact copies of floppy disks from a master disk or disk image. A copy of a disk made by dragging icons is not identical to the original. Disks created using Disk Copy are exact duplicates. When you use disk images, you know that all of the files have been duplicated correctly and completely. For installation disks, you must use Disk Copy to duplicate the disk images.

What YouÕll Need

You must use high-density disks to copy the disk images (one disk for each disk image).

Making the Backup Disks

To use Disk Copy to back up the disk images onto floppy disks, follow the steps below. You may want to print these instructions before you begin (open the File menu and choose Print).
 
1. Locate the Disk Copy icon in this folder and double-click to open it.

2. When the Welcome screen appears, click anywhere inside it.

3. When the Disk Duplicator window appears, click the Load Image File button.

4. When the dialog box appears, choose a disk image to copy and click the Open button.

The disk images have file names that end in the word Òimage.Ó (They are sometimes located in a folder named ÒDisk Images.Ó) If you see a file named ÒDisk Tools.imageÓ copy it first, then copy the remaining disk images.

5. Click the Make a Copy button. 

6. Insert a floppy disk into the disk drive.

7. At the ÒAre you sure...Ó message, click the Duplicate button.

8. When you have copied the disk image, remove the floppy disk and label it.

9. Lock the disk by doing these steps:

¥ Look at the back of the disk.
¥ Find the square hole with a tab inside it in the corner of the disk. 
¥ Slide the tab toward the edge of the disk so that the square hole is open.

IMPORTANT Some installation disks generated by Disk Copy will not function correctly unless the disks are locked before you use them. You must lock any disks named ÒDisk Tools.imageÓ and ÒInstall Disk.imageÓ before you use them to re-install your system software. For detailed instructions on locking floppy disks, refer to the information about disks in Macintosh Guide (available in the Guide menu when the Finder is active).

10. Repeat steps 3 through 9 for each disk image in the Disk Images folder.

11. When you have copied all the disk images, click Stop Copying to close the Disk Copy application. 


Troubleshooting

You may encounter errors while running Disk Copy if Virtual Memory is turned on. If Virtual Memory is turned on and you see the message ÒAn error (-620) occurred while reading the disk imageÓ or the message ÒAn error (-74) occurred while copying/verifying the disk,Ó turn Virtual Memory off. Then restart your computer, and begin Disk Copy again.
